Attn. Fishing Collectors! 1800's Primitive Wicker & Wood Fish Scaler in Concord, Ohio For Sale

Back in the day, there was a need to scale a large amount of fish and this wonderful, xxxx's wood and wicker fish scaler was hand made to serve the purpose and save a tremendous amount of time. Absolutely ingenious!!! The basket hung on a rod, slipped through the center holes and tied onto the boat. The lid slips onto the two bolts and would hold the catch until it was time to go back to shore. The basket would spin in the water behind the boat as they rowed home, removing the scales. Evidence that small metal bolts were also tossed in with the fish for additional scale removal are shown in the picture below and as you can see, many are still stuck in the wicker. Also shown in the photo are the old, square cut nails which dates it back into the xxxx's. This primitive piece is still in amazing display condition considering it's prior use in water so you know it was made well and to last a long time. It could hold quite a large catch too, measuring 2 feet long and a foot wide. The fishing history this piece represents is just wonderful. An absolutely ingenious piece of work someone had a need for, then sat down and made this by hand. It's one of a kind. $450
